The SSA determines that Maria has been disabled since January 2023, so she’s owed 24 months of back pay.
- Monthly benefit: $1,400
- 24 months × $1,400 = $33,600 in back pay
The attorney fee is 25% of that amount. Maria keeps the remaining $26,400, plus her ongoing monthly benefits of $1,400 going forward.
