After Approval: What Happens Next in a Disability Case

For many clients, the moment they hear “You’ve been approved” feels like the end of a long and exhausting journey. But as attorneys who work with disability claimants( SSDI) know, approval isn’t the finish line — it’s the beginning of the payment process.

At Walker Firm dba Casa de la Justicia, we guide our clients through the critical next steps after approval — ensuring they understand payment timing, retroactive benefits, and their ongoing responsibilities with the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Here’s what we help them navigate once the case has been approved.

When to Expect the First Payment

Once a client’s SSDI claim is approved, the SSA generally issues the first payment within about 60 days.

Payments are made a month after they’re due, on a schedule tied to the claimant’s birth date:

Born on the 1st–10th → Paid the second Wednesday of the following month

Born on the 11th–20th → Paid the third Wednesday

Born after the 20th → Paid the fourth Wednesday

For example, a claimant born on May 8 will receive their first check on the second Wednesday of the next month or June.

We ensure our clients understand this schedule and have direct deposit set up correctly to avoid delays.

The Five-Month Waiting Period

Even after approval, SSDI includes a mandatory five-month waiting period from the date the SSA determines the disability began. That means benefits begin in the sixth month after the onset date.

For example, if disability onset is determined by SSA to be January 2024, benefits start accruing in June 2024. The client’s first check (and back pay, if applicable) will reflect this timeline.

When clients are approved, they often qualify for back pay — the accumulated benefits owed from the sixth month after the established onset date.

For example, if the SSA determines the onset date was April 2023 and approval comes in April 2024, the client receives payments dating back to October 2023. Those funds are typically issued with the first regular SSDI payment.

Clients with ALS are an exception; they receive benefits starting from the actual onset date, with no five-month waiting period.

Common Post-Approval Issues

Even after approval, clients may need assistance with:

Understanding payment schedules and direct deposit setup

Confirming back pay calculations

Reporting changes in health, income, or address to the SSA

Addressing delayed or incorrect payments

These details can be confusing, particularly for Spanish-speaking clients who face language or access barriers. Our bilingual team at Casa de Justicia ensures these clients receive accurate information and timely follow-up.

The post-approval phase is often where confusion and frustration begin — not end.
Our firm doesn’t stop at approval; we continue supporting clients until their benefits are properly issued and understood.

We are proud to partner with referring attorneys who want their clients to receive representation throughout the entire SSDI process.

If a client will be unable to work for one year due to their disability or need help ensuring they receive their post-approval payments smoothly, we’re here to help. Call us at 1-800-454-5454
